Evil Eye

Allah ta’ala has created the FATE of man even before creating him. This fate is called Qadr or Taqdeer. Everything a man faces in his life is written in it, all the diseases, problems, wealth, health, marriage, where he will go, where he will die everything is written. Nothing can be changed from it.

One of the diseases that Allah ta’ala created is a spiritual disease called Evil-Eye (nazr). What is nazr? Nazr is a spiritual disease which is created through the eyes of other humans or Jinn usually because of Jealousy (hasad) and has a negative effect on the affected person.

For example, a person buys a new car, someone comes along and says wow what a car and does not say MashaAllah with it. The person might also be jealous of the inside, so what happens is that the effects created through his eyes and saying this are carried by demons and the affected person is hit with it. As a result, the car starts to have problems, accidents, and other breakdowns.

When a person is affected by nazr (ain in Arabic) the symptoms are similar to that of magic or sehr. They believe that someone has done sehr on them. But that’s not the case. In the evil eye, there can be no bad intention involved. Even children can catch the eye of their parents.

Rasool Allah sallAllahu alaihi wsallam said,“The cause of the majority of deaths in my ummah will be Ain (nazr) after Qadr.“ Whatever happens in this world is due to what Allah ta’ala has written. A person cannot move an inch from his place without it being written in the book of fate by Allah ta’ala. So Rasool Allah sallAllahu alaihi wsallam said that the basic reason for death is that it’s written but after that, the reason will be evil eye (nazr or ain). But the cause of death can be anything apparent.

For example, a young person has a good job and is successful in his career and suddenly he develops heart problems and dies from it, or he gets into a fatal accident and loses his life. The apparent reason is the heart problem or the accident while in reality, the evil eye of someone is the real cause working from behind.

Allah ta’ala has commanded us to seek protection from the evil of the envier (jealous person).

“And from the evil of the envier when he envies.” [113:5]

An incident is related to hadith:

Imam Ahmad, Malik, al-Nasai and Ibn Hibban narrated from Sahl ibn Haneef that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out and traveled with him towards Makkah until they were in the mountain pass of al-Kharar in al-Jahfah. There Sahl ibn Haneef did ghusl (bathed), and he was a handsome white-skinned man with beautiful skin. ‘Amir ibn Rabee’ah, one of Banu ‘Adiyy ibn K’ab looked at him whilst he was doing ghusl and said: “I have never seen such beautiful skin as this, not even the skin of a virgin,” and Sahl fell to the ground. They went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, can you do anything for Sahl because by Allah he cannot raise his head.” He said, “Do you accuse anyone with regard to him?” They said, “‘Amir ibn Rabee’ah looked at him.” So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called ‘Amir and rebuked him strongly. He said, “Why would one of you kill his brother? If you see something that you like, then pray for blessing for him.” Then he said to him, “Wash yourself for him.” So he washed his face, hands, forearms, knees and the sides of his feet, and inside his izaar (lower garment) in the vessel. Then that water was poured over him, and a man poured it over his head and back from behind. He did that to him, then Sahl got up and joined the people and there was nothing wrong with him.

InshaAllah in the next parts we will discuss how to get protection against evil eye and how to get rid of it after being affected.
